Background music will be provided by sisters Mairi and Steaphanaidh Chaimbeul from Skye, playing clarsach, and Katie Foster, from Edinburgh, playing fiddle.
All three musicians are pupils of St Mary’s Music School, Edinburgh, where they receive their full academic education together with specialist music training. The school has 70 pupils – instrumentalists, choristers, composers and singers – who are supported by the Scottish Government through the Aided Places Scheme. Mairi (16) and Steaphanaidh (15) are boarders and Katie (17) is a day pupil.
Mairi has been performing from a young age. She has won many Mod Gold medals, winning her first at age 8 and most recently in 2009. Steaphanaidh too has many Mod trophies and medals. Mairi and Steaphanaidh were finalists in BBC Radio Two’s Young Folk Award and Mairi was a finalist too in BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Traditional Musician 2010, broadcast as part of Celtic Connections. As well as playing clarsach, Mairi plays harp, violin and sings and Steaphanaidh plays cello, saxophone and sings.
Katie is a keen violinist. She loves solo performing and ensemble playing also, as a member of St Mary’s Music School String Ensemble and Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and the Edinburgh Youth Orchestra. Katie also plays with the senior Jazz Ensemble at school and, with Mairi, is a member of the school’s Celtic folk-fusion band, Kilairum, whose recent achievements include winning the prestigious Danny Kyle Open Stage competition at this year’s Celtic Connections festival.
